Wow...to read about and hear about the devastation in Haiti right now is a bit overwhelming. I've tried to imagine what it must be like for the people who are actually, in reality, there. Right now. Trying to survive. Amidst untold grief. Amidst unbelievable devastation. While I am enjoying the comforts and luxuries of a warm, dry home with food, clean water, and all of my children safe and sound. I try to imagine what it must be like for the friends and family around the world who right now do not know if their loved ones are survivors or part of the growing number of the fallen. Unimaginable.
And I've also read the harsh comments made about the country of Haiti. By a Christian leader. Great. Now? Really? This is the time to criticize them and cast judgment? Seriously?
I just read a Tweet by @ikereighard on Twitter and he said, "If you must eat crow, it's best to do it while it's young and tender." Let's hope this happens in this case.
Jesus said it very plainly that every law of God hung on two commandments: Love God, Love Others. The writers of the New Testament gave some principles that give us some practical ways in which to do this. John said, "(L)et us not love [merely] in theory or in speech, but in deed and in truth (in practice and in sincerity)." (I John 3:18 AMP)
What if we decided to leave the judging to God (realizing, by the way, that natural disasters are happening all over the world. Those of us in GA remember the unprecedented flood of September 2009, for instance--right here in the Bible Belt, too), and focus our energies instead of Loving our God, and loving others? It's not for us to judge the why's of this earthquake--as if that could be completely understood--but to come together to help our fellow human beings in a time of unbelievable horror.
I adopted a saying a long time ago when I found myself feeling completely overwhelmed by all of the needs I saw and my inability to be as effective as I desired to be: None of us can do everything, but all of us can do something. You can give to so many different agencies that have the means to use those dollars to put action to your words and sympathies. Our family made a donation through the Red Cross. Find an agency you trust and give. Any and every amount helps! You can pray. If possible, you might even be able to go. None of us can do everything, but my friend, ALL of us can do something.
